Urban issues at the 4th ESF |

Dear friends,
Here is a short note on the developments regarding the “urban issues at the 4th ESF” in the European Preparatory Assembly of Vienna that we participated in:
A.
Date/Venue: As you may know, it was decided that the ESF will take place on 4-7 of May, in the old (west) airport of Athens (in the Olympic basketball & fencing facilities that were built there and in the surrounding open spaces), see link:

B.
After the unanimous proposition of the Greek Organising Committee, a new thematic axis was approved with the title: “local mobilisations, urban politics” - subtitled: challenges & struggles in cities and regions / local social forum procedures
C.
A proposition was made to the network of local social forums to coparticipate in the creation of a distinct physical open space during the ESF / a common name was found for this space “urban space/ local forums”
We discussed about setting up a co-managed physical space –to have two rooms one next to the other “under the same roof” with a common café in-between, etc.
The precise arrangements of the common open space are maters to be worked out – also in relation to the characteristics of the venue of the esf.

D.
During the EPA we made some first contacts with organisations from France, Turkey, Hungary, Sweden …
PROPOSED FURTHER STEPS:
- About the seminar procedure
From our point of view, proposals and interventions until today are very useful in order to start formulating the different subjects that will be discussed, but before and in order to start the merging and combination procedure we have to:
�� Continue outreach and attract many more groups local/networks)
active in all regions of Europe around urban issues (there are still important geographical areas? not ‘represented’ at all: Italy, Spain, Eastern Europe etc.)
�� Wait for more proposals from list participants – anyway, the ESF deadline for the submissions of proposals in the workspace.fse-esf.org website was set to 20 February
�� In the seminars we would like to see diverse representation from many countries and different (kinds of) organisations / we would like to keep a balance of the participant orgs’ different viewpoints and experiences.
! Please keep in mind that the distinction between seminars and workshops is not really important – one can name all conference / panel / seminar / workshop types as dialogue events, whether an event will acquire the seminar status depends on the supporting / participant orgs
that will co-organise it. There are also other types of action that one can propose.
- About the setting-up of the urban space
In order for us to start imagining and designing the space, we must have some ideas on what will be hosted there (will there be videos, posters, exhibitions of photos, etc. from various local groups and networks??)
We need your first ideas on collecting this kind of material - if we have it earlier we can also work on translating / subtitling it and organising its presentation…
