Update on Urban proposals at ESF 2006

It is nice to see that concrete proposals are starting to gather in our discussion list.

This is most welcome, since - as discussed in the last EPA - by the 20th of February the bulk of the proposals must be 'on the table' for the Programme Committee to start summarise, combine and merge proposals.
From our point of view, we would like to highlight the following issues regarding the future procedures (which may be already well-known to many of you, but still, it might be useful to repeat):

1. it is better for the proposals to be supported by as many as possible (at least 3) organisations / groups from a variety of countries/contexts - this adds to their appeal and visibility as relatively large events (with simultaneous interpretation to/from many languages). The FSE-ESF principles call for unity, diversity, wideness of dialogue events!

2. As we see it (and explicitly expressed in previous emails of the list) , some proposals seem to be able to combine – please see in http://lists.riseup.net/www/arc/urbanforum06/2006-02/pdf9VJuQu7Z1n.pdf the summary of proposals so far and a first ‘mapping’ of possible synergies… (sorry if we forgot something – was not intended! - please correct!)

3. we believe it would be helpful to advance (but not necessarily finish) this discussion on possible mergings by the end of February to help the work of the programme committee that will converge in Athens and Frankfurt at the end of February & early March respectively

4. One question that we have: do you thing the overall number of seminars and workshops should be somehow limited? How many seminars / workshops you believe should be organised in the urban thematic? To explain:
• maybe its better to restrict seminars to a number that will allow someone interested in urban matters to attend many of these to have some overview
and still have time to see the exhibitions at the ‘space’ and interact informally in smaller workshops (or even go to other events or issues’ seminars!)
• take in mind that 4th ESF’s time slots are restricted: only 3 or 4 per day - but not for 4 days!: only Thursday afternoon, Friday all day and Saturday morning are fully open – then it’s the demonstration and the assembly of the movements
• would you agree to try to organise our proposals around 4 (max. 5) dialogue events? And put more weight to smaller workshops in the physical “urban space”

5. Do not forget! Urban matters and cities are not only about discussing: we will have a ‘showcase’ for posters, photos, videos, models to be exhibited for those 3-4 days – so we need lots of materials. Also we plan to organise a small tour of those of you (and other esf participants) interested to some
places in the city or even a small direct action to some contested by local movements place near-by (?) So, let’s not fill our 3 days’ programme completely…

Other people having expressed interest (but with no concrete seminar proposals registered in workspace yet)

• Cesare Ottolini - IAI Coordinator (info@habitants.org) : 2 seminars in the “Urban Tent” initiative (?! – is this the same with the urban space?)
