Encourage non Ivory Tower researchers and activists to support the ESF urban space |

I am writing from Marseille France, am involved both as a researcher investigating international economic policies and their implication for housing markets, wealth distribution and cities, but also as an activist seeking a cooperative solution for our apartment building in the centre of Marseille menaced by a sale from the Swiss Li e Global Insurance group to a speculator registerd in Luxembourg with probable links to "import export" activities (M*!ia and Or$&!ised C&8'me) who seeks to expulse us the local residents and sell on the apartments to gentrifiers seeking a home in "exotic" Noailles, Marseille.
I also attend activities of but am not actively involved of an interesting Association here called Centre Ville Pour Tous who are extremely active trying to defend local residents and find solutions for residents of the Centre of Marseille and especially those who live on the Rue de la Republique, where virtually the whole road that is 4000 apartments have been bought with state and city support by international specualtive investments funds and are busy desplacing longstanding local residents, renovating the flats and facades in preparation to sell on and make a fast buck, all on the back of public infrastructure improvements.

So I very much echo your call for a and more horizontal space and workshops centered on urban activistism and research. Perhaps we should formulate some proposals, encourage other similar minded non "ivory tower" researchers and activists to support the proposals so at least we have indicated our needs for more time and space within the formaility of the ESF urban space.
We would welcome comments from others who support these ideas.
